In June, the singer and Glee star formerly known as Charmaine Pempengco (or by his stage name Charice) announced his transgender identity along with his new name, Jake Zyrus.
To distinguish his true identity from his previous social media identity, he removed his old Twitter and Instagram posts and changed his social media names and handles. He said on Twitter that he was overwhelmed by the positive reaction and support from his fans.
My first tweet as Jake. Overwhelmed. Saw all your love comments and I'm so happy. Finally. I love you, everyone and see you soon.— Jake Zyrus (@jakezyrus) June 20, 2017
forever grateful. let's just love one another. i love you all. I really do. I reaaaaalllyyyy ddddoooo. 😔❤️— Jake Zyrus (@jakezyrus) June 20, 2017
Zyrus didn't initially post about how he chose his name leaving some fans to wonder why he chose Jake Zyrus.
On Thursday, Zyrus sat down for an interview conducted in a mix of Filipino and English to talk about the name with Filipino tv network ABS-CBN.
Zyrus told ABS-CBN that the process felt very easy and was a simple process. He stood in front of his mirror and repeated names until he landed on Jake, which felt right. He said that knew he wanted two names, so he tried combining names with Jake, eventually choosing Zyrus (a boy's name that's relatively uncommon in the U.S.) as his second name.
In the same interview, Zyrus said that announcing his new name felt like being "reborn" and that he is more confident now than before.
